Brianna Rosia, who has directed musical theater shows in Washington County for 15 years, said she fell for “Seussical,” a story mainly based on the stories of Drs. Seuss, “Horton Hears a Who,” “Horton Hatches an Egg” and “The One-Feathered Tail of Gertrude McFuzz,” with numerous references to other Dr. Seuss.

“Putting 53 people on this kind of stage was an adventure,” Rosia said, “and in the midst of the pandemic and other things, everyone stepped up.… I couldn’t ask for a better team to show my dreams. ”

Rosia said her desire to direct the musical began when she performed the main role in high school. Although he liked the show, he said the overall experience was not very pleasant and the cast was not happy. He then set the intention to direct the show itself someday and create something magical for the world to see, he said.

“I wrote in my journal,‘ Someday, I’m going to direct ‘Seussical’ and everyone will be happy, ’and since that moment, this is what I’ve worked so hard for,” she said.

Rosia took a variety of theater classes in high school and college, including set and costume design. Whenever he was asked to choose a show to create, he chose “Seussical.” While fellow students chose deep and dark scripts to be reviewed during a script review class, he again chose “Seussical.” Although her teacher originally felt apprehensive about her choice, Rosia said she was able to shed new light on the course of the story.

“At first, when you watch or read it, you think,‘ Oh, that’s cute, ’but like all Dr. Seuss stories, there’s so much deep meaning behind it,” Rosia said.

Although Rosia has had many opportunities to almost direct her dream musical in recent years, there has always been a hindrance to the show.

One day, as an artistic board member for The Stage Door and director of summer programs, Rosia sat down in a meeting with discussions about upcoming shows. When she was asked what show she wanted to do next summer, she suggested “Seussical,” which she thinks will be rejected. To his surprise, they agreed.

And instead of just doing a junior kid show, they decided to open the cast up to the whole family.

“This is really the first time the show has been performed with seniors in St. George in 15 years,” Rosia said. “It’s popular for kids to perform but not uncommon for adults.”

The show includes the cast of many different families, such as Joel Thomas, one of the actors who played Horton the Elephant on the show 15 years ago, who plays with his wife and three children – the youngest child being Just 14 months away. Jamie Cook, his wife and four children also perform in the musical. Barb Christensen plays the main “Mayzie” along with her daughter and husband. Geoffrey Reynolds, his wife, and his 6 -year -old daughter are also included in the play, along with four additional families.

When she saw the first number of “Seussical” perform on stage, Rosia said she had no words. Although she doesn’t usually cry, she said she cried more on this show than ever. He stressed his gratitude for his “amazing” support system, which includes his family, friends and cast members.

“Talent is literally the best of the best and I couldn’t ask for a better cast to pursue my vision,” Rosia said. “The sets, the costume-it all comes together and it’s magic. A dream has come true. ”

Stage Door, which was incepted about six years ago, is now managed by Jalee and Josh Scott, who are also producers of Seussical.

“We just want to create a place where we can make art that isn’t mainstream and isn’t done anywhere else,” Jalee Scott said. “While Seussical was mainstream, we did something different.”
